My father took me to a little shop of a local sign board painter in kabul in 1992. It was the time of civil war in Afghanistan, and as a 9 year old child, I experienced a lot of trauma. My school was taken over by displaced families, and there was no electricity and war in the streets. But I remember going to that painter shop and learning drawing faces and drew all along. I remember my waiting for my teacher to give me a reference drawing to take home and draw. There was no quality paper available. Todays office printer paper was a luxury. Me and my brother would by 10 pages at a time. Now I am 41 years old, living in Canada, and when I look back, I feel how important that art class was for me in cooping with what was going on in the outside world. I still google Maps the location of that little shop and wonder where my art teacher would be now, if still alive.

Good afternoon! A few days ago I discovered your UA-cam channel and I think you have a painting style that I can somewhat manage as a beginner painter. I haven’t seen all of your videos yet, so if you mention it already, I’m sorry. Do you have experience in water mixable oils? A shop nearby has a 50% discount on their Winsor and Newton Artisan paint. I have only a little experience with acrylics, but they dry a bit too quick for my pace. Do you know if I can use my acrylic paint brushes I have at home already for water mixable oils? Because they can also be washed with water and soap. Or do I then ruin the brushes when I want to paint with acrylics again later on? Have a nice day!

You can load anything into a color and make it do what you need. The point is, titanium mixes a certain way. Iron oxide black mixes down into a warm grey- brownish. Ivory black has a blue undertone due to the ultra marine it contains. Its not that it's easy or hard to overcome, but knowing that it is there TO overcome. This is why artists need to know how the pigment is made, and what it blends down into, simply knowing makes using it easy.

Is that why when you when watch artists begin a painting they often paint the whole canvas a different colour all over first and when they do the painting that colour is not anywhere to be seen . Instead of painting directly on white ? I have seen that happen often when watching people on yourube or TV's Britains Portrait artist of the year in the UK is that better than painting directly on to white . I have often wondered why they do that .

Thank you very much that was a really interesting thought provoking video . Especially about the children in the concentration camp . Yes it's interesting to see when art is not allowed how much that affects people and us individually . The joy of being creative is so important whatever it is .

As a Christian, I believe that our creativity is partially how we are created in the image of God. We see His creativity in His creation and we desire to create as well. Doing art is also a great way to get your mind off troubling matters in life for a time.

Mark, I agree. Art changes lives. I always wanted to paint and when I finally did in my mid fifties it changed my life. It felt like coming home. Now I’m teaching and coaching painting with oil, acrylics, tempera in realistic, abstract and also intuitive art. It’s mind blowing cool to see people change.

thanks for being transparent. I don't like AI images though. I think it is cooler to make it all yourself and light it and bring in things etc. Most people don't seem to have ideas and imagination anymore and I would think that AI is not a substitute for being unimaginative. Using it shuts down the imagination. That is what I contest. I didn't like any of the AI images that were shown. Use the imagination or ability to envision or loose it.

I think it can be like meditation. It quiets the mind and allows flow and inspiration. Athletes do the same when they get into the zone of state or flow. You know when it feels good it’s for you. I blame my mom for thinking I was an artist when I made marks on the wall as a baby. She may have manifested my career choice. Like a mom she said she was so moved it was dramatic - and then years later art appreciation was like osmosis and effortless. So I just knew it was for me. But I think as long as we follow our bliss we can do or be anything. Art is about appreciation which like love is the highest state of being so no wonder it feels good when we let go of the struggle and allow inspiration to flow. 💖

I remember as a child, I drew cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester the Cat, and I drew them with an open mind. But as I got older and life unfolded, I eventually stopped drawing. Now I know that I desire to create and bring out this creative child that I used to be, because I miss how the younger me didn’t have a care in the world and was happy. But for some reason, I think to hard about doing something and don’t know why😢.

This is very different from what I always thought/assumed, which was to add the opposite color to create that colors shadow. This explains why I always had so much trouble with very vibrant colors in my still life paintings. Amazing!
